Students pose for a photo with U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan.

Happy April! I believe the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and with all the rain we’ve been having, we should certainly have beautiful blooms ahead. I must admit, I was relieved to see rain instead of the 8 inches of snow that had been predicted!

This past Tuesday, we welcomed a special visitor to MLS. Senator Hassan spent time with our students and teachers, learning more about our literacy programs. It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the great work happening in our school and to celebrate our successes in literacy.

Spring is in the air at MLS! Our garden committee met this past week, and we are looking forward to planting seeds in classrooms soon, with plans to transfer them to our gardens in May.

Across grade levels, students are engaged in a variety of project-based learning experiences. It has been a joy to see their enthusiasm as they explore topics such as different animals and their habitats, how to bring stories to life, and westward expansion. I’m sure many of you have been hearing all about this learning at home as well!

Elementary school students dressed in character for their production of The Wizard of Oz

Dear MLS Families,

As I work on this newsletter, I’m looking outside and watching snow and ice rain fall. For me, March is one of the toughest months because we never know if it will snow, rain, or be beautiful and above 50 degrees! Thank you all for continuing to send your child’s snow gear in. Even though we didn’t have snow on the ground this past week, it has been muddy and cold, and all the gear helps students stay dry and warm.

We have finished Parent-Teacher Conferences for the spring. We had over 90% of families participate in their child’s conference. Parent engagement is key to student success, and we are so appreciative that so many of you value your child’s education and support their learning journey.

The Wizard of Oz production last weekend was a magical event for MLS! The whole school community came together to create an unforgettable experience. Our packed house for both performances and the family support in helping everything come together for the production was amazing to see.

I look forward to spring and all the events we have planned for students and families.

Lions' Update 3/8/26

Dear MLS Families,

It’s hard to believe we are already starting the second week of March! We had a wonderful Reading Week. Thank you for encouraging your children to participate by dressing up for the different theme days. We were also excited to welcome guest author Lesa Cline-Ransome. She did an incredible job with her presentation, sharing how she writes her stories and where her ideas come from. The students were very engaged and enjoyed learning about the writing process.

We have parent-teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. I'm excited to see parents in the building supporting their child’s education and growth, and these conferences are a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers and celebrate the progress students are making.

Students work on an art project for an upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz

Dear MLS Families,

February proved to be a very fast month! We had a wonderful Family Engagement Night with the Contra Dance early in February, followed by celebrations for the 100th Day of School and Valentine’s Day. It has been a busy and joyful few weeks at MLS!

When we return from February break, we will be in March, and the first week back is READING WEEK! We are excited to celebrate the joy of reading throughout the school. As part of Reading Week, we are thrilled to welcome visiting author Lesa Cline-Ransome on Wednesday. We are looking forward to her time with our students and the opportunity to inspire a love of reading and writing.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on March 12th and March 13th. Please be on the lookout for information from your child’s classroom teacher about signing up for a conference time. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child.

Two students on cross-country skis during recess

Dear MLS Families,

I’m sending the newsletter a bit early because we have lots to share this week!

We’re excited to kick off new Spirit Days for the month of February. Classes voted on their class colors—please read below to see what colors your student’s grade will be wearing.

Please remember that we are hosting our Contra Dance this Friday at MLS from 6:30–8:00 PM. Parents must stay with their children during the dance. There will also be a bake sale to raise money for the Wizard of Oz play.

February is shaping up to be a very busy (and fun!) month full of celebrations. The 100th day of school is right around the corner! In addition, our 4th grade LEO group is organizing a Winter Wonderland Dance Party during recess on February 11th. They created posters and hung them throughout the school—it’s been wonderful to watch them organize and lead a fun event for the entire community.

We will also be celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 13th, so the Afternoon Sing has been postponed to February 20th. Our Kindergarten students will be performing at the Afternoon Sing on the 20th—we can’t wait!

A group of student pose on top of a large snow sculpture on a school playground

Happy New Year to all our families! We have had an incredible first week back to school, and the kids have been amazing. I’ve been in and out of classrooms all week, and it has been wonderful to see students actively engaged in their learning.

The ice storm and cold temperatures at the beginning of the week certainly made recess and playground time interesting! As a school team, we made a plan to ensure students could still move their bodies by participating in indoor gross motor activities. We brought out the parachute, rock climbing wall, disco bowling, and lots of dancing. These activities helped get the wiggles out and supported strong learning in the afternoons. I believe fun was had by all—and I know I had a blast dancing with students!

During the second half of the week, we were able to enjoy the beautiful snow on the playground. Students engaged in lots of teamwork by building snowmen, creating sledding paths, and even making a HUGE snow caterpillar!

Please continue reading the Lions’ Update to learn more about the Lions Pride Math Challenge and other fun activities happening at school and in our community this winter.
